GOLF CARS IN THE NEWS Downtown Slowdown

A Florida city’s plan to open up downtown to golf cars now excludes most of downtown.

According to the Ocala Star Banner, city councilors want to ease into golf cars in the city by first allowing them in less congested areas and studying how they do in traffic. The move came after the council first voted to allow golf cars throughout downtown.

“I view this as a pilot project in a lot of ways. Let’s do it right here. Let’s show this will work. Let’s show they can get along — cars and golf carts and everybody together — and then we can look at moving it into downtown,” said council president pro-tem Justin Grabelle.

“I know that our businesses would probably like to have golf carts come into downtown right away. I’ve tried to explain to everybody the process. This is a process. This is the first time we are doing this,” Grabelle said. “We have to, I think, be smart in the steps we take and be diligent with how we expand. Because if it goes wrong and people get a bad taste in their mouth, it will probably end up going away.”

Councilors also expressed concerns about major construction projects in downtown that make current timing difficult.
