An Alabama town was purchasing 72 new golf cars for its municipal golf course.

According to the Daily Mountain Eagle, the Dora City Council approved almost $300,000 for the new fleet at Horse Creek Golf Course. The need for new cars was put down to increased use on the current ones due largely to COVID-19, which had driven record usage of the outdoor, mostly distanced pleasures of the golf course.

Mayor Randy Stephens told the council in May that the golf course had set usage records for three consecutive months. The record, he said, involved a “number of rounds and the amount of revenue generated, which is a good thing but it has also taken its toll on equipment. But we are off to a good season so far.”

He explained that cars received even more use because during the pandemic, each player was required to use a separate car. The older cars, purchased in 2016, were failing to hold charges, while other components were also wearing out. Golf course manager Don Cummings said the cars had been used for 220,000 rounds of golf since they were purchased. “That’s a lot of rounds of golf in a four-and-a-half year period,” he said. The course was getting quotes from E-Z-GO and Club Car.

The mayor explained to the council the trend towards fast-charging, longer lasting lithium batteries. He also noted that Club Car was offering more trade-in money for the old cars. Club Car was also throwing in new chargers.
